« Back to Glossary Index

QR Code Activation (eSIM) is the most common method for provisioning an eSIM profile onto a consumer device. The carrier encodes a URL pointing to their SM-DP+ server along with a matching token into a QR code, which the device’s native SIM management UI scans to initiate the secure download. The entire process typically completes in under two minutes on a stable Wi-Fi connection.

How it works

The QR code contains an LPA (Local Profile Assistant) string in the format: LPA:1$smdp.example.com$MATCHINGID. The device’s LPA client parses this string, establishes a mutual TLS session with the SM-DP+ server, authenticates using certificates stored in the eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card), and pulls down the encrypted profile package. Once installed, the profile can be enabled or disabled at will from the device’s cellular settings.

Key facts

  • Alternative method: Many carriers also support manual entry of an activation code as a fallback to QR scanning
  • One-time use: Most eSIM QR codes are single-use and expire after first scan, so screenshot or save them before scanning
  • Wi-Fi required: The profile download requires an active internet connection, typically Wi-Fi before the plan activates

For builders

QR code activation is the step where most eSIM purchases either succeed smoothly or frustrate users. Common failure points include scanning too early (before the carrier’s system is ready), poor camera angle, and attempting activation without Wi-Fi. Builders using eSIM for travel should activate plans at home over Wi-Fi before departing, rather than relying on airport connectivity.
